Cyber Deck

A custom off the grid handheld computer I made for coding, gaming and anything else

On this project, I built my own cyber deck. This project was inspired by other creators I have recently seen make one, and I wanted to take an attempt at making my own. I also really leaned into the sketch/design phase, going through multiple revisions of different looks

  • I learned how to build around already built systems while adding my own personality to it
  • Since I spent less time on the electronics, I could focus on an interesting design
  • I used off-the-shelf parts to make it as easy as possible for someone to rebuild themselves.

What is a cyber deck? A cyberdeck is a custom-built, portable computer with a user-inspired look, which means it can look like and function in a way that is unique to you. As a little back story, in the 2010s, cheap single-board computers (like the Raspberry Pi) and accessible 3D printing let makers actually build these devices, turning cyberdecks into a real DIY hobby with active online communities. Today, they're used less for "hacking" and more as portable Linux workstations, ham radio/SDR rigs, retro gaming machines, security-testing tools, or simply as functional art pieces where the build itself — often housed in repurposed shells like old typewriters or briefcases — is the main point.
